Russell Viper Venom Time (dilute)
Justification
The presence of antiphospholipid antibodies, such as lupus anticoagulant, increases the risk of arterial thrombosis, venous thrombosis, thrombocytopenia and recurrent miscarriage. Lupus anticoagulants result in the prolongation of clotting times which correct with the addition of phospholipids.

ALTERNATIVE NAMES | dRVVT, LA screen |
DESCRIPTION | Russell’s Viper venom directly activates factor X, bypassing factor VII of the extrinsic pathway and the contact and antihemophilic factors of the intrinsic pathway. Therefore, the dRVVT is more specific screening test for lupus anticoagulant than aPTTs, as it is not affected by deficiencies in or specific inhibitors against Factor VII, XII, XI, IX, or VIII. When prolongations are detected in the dRVVT Screen, a dRVVT Confirm is performed and the dRVVT Ratio calculated. |
